With a world full of rich storytelling, a diverse cast of characters, and detailed writing, it's no wonder theAvatarseries is so revered even fifteen years after its original release. Its timelessness allows it to be appreciated by people at any age, especially since many of the issues it addresses have very real-world counterparts.

While there's a lot to be said about the world-building and character development within the series, much of the dialogue is underrated. The writers do an excellent job of portraying emotion and foreshadowing in many of the show's conversations, as well as giving viewers the series' signature humorous exchanges.

10 Hilarious: "This Tea Is Nothing More Than Hot Leaf Juice!" "Uncle, That's What All Tea Is." - Iroh & Zuko

iroh lecturing zuko over tea avatar

After the two had been branded traitors of the Fire Nation, Iroh and Zuko were resolved to living out their lives in disguise within the walls of Ba Sing Se. While there, Iroh enlisted Zuko's help in working at a local tea shop in the Lower Ring of the city. As a connoisseur of the finest brews, Iroh was unimpressed with their boss's attempt at tea.

Zuko wasn't as offended as his Uncle but still managed to draw Iroh's disappointment and sadness with his lack of appreciation for the better kinds of tea.

9 Chilling: "My Father Says She [Azula] Was Born Lucky, He Says I Was Lucky To Be Born." - Zuko

Aang and Zuko in a Northern Water Tribe Blizzard

Even early on in the series, viewers knew Zuko's life hadn't been easy. While certainly benefitting from the privileges of being a Prince, Zuko was subjected to abuse at the hands of his father, Firelord Ozai. Even before burning Zuko's face and banishing him, Ozai treated Zuko terribly, criticizing his son's firebending skills and making him feel like he wasn't doing enough.

Having captured Aang during the Seige of the Northern Water Tribe, Zuko found himself with nowhere to go in the middle of a massive blizzard. Taking shelter in a cave, he spoke of his trauma to an unconscious Aang (who was in the Spirit World). His predicament would have surely garnered Aang's sympathy and might have even led the young Avatar to try convincing him to switch sides right then and there.

8 Hilarious: "Pants Are An Illusion, And So Is Death." - Huu

Collage of Huu and his Swamp Monster

Before the invasion of the Fire Nation during The Day of Black Sun, Sokka sent his father, Hakoda, to recruit as many allies as possible. Among those allies was the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Though they were Waterbenders, the Foggy Swamp Tribe was distinctly different from the Northern and Southern Water Tribes of the known world, with their own unique culture and bending style.

Towards the end of the Hundred Year War, Huu was considered the Tribe's equivalent leader. Despite Hakoda's questioning about how war-ready the Tribe was, Huu reassured him that facing the horrors of war wouldn't be a problem (without pants, of course).

7 Chilling: "You Miscalculated. I Love Zuko More Than I Fear You." - Mai

Plenty of clues hinted at Mai's dislike for Azula were present throughout the series, only showing genuine happiness when she was around Zuko. Even though Zuko had broken up with her and betrayed the Fire Nation, Mai's affection for him ultimately caused her to follow down the same path he'd taken.

When Mai was apprehended for her treason, Azula angrily confronted her, lost as to way Mai would ever do such a thing. Mai's response to the Princess left the audience questioning if the two were ever friends in the first place.

6 Hilarious: "You Would Have Me Use My Feminine Charms To Take Advantage Of That Poor Man? I Think You And I Are Going To Get Along Swimmingly!" - Hama

Avatar-The-Last-Airbender-Hama

Despite only appearing in one episode, Hama was one of the most impactful characters in the series. She gave a lot of insight into the horrors of war and just how terribly the Fire Nation treated its prisoners. Despite some of her decisions (more on that later), she felt justified in her actions for the trauma she endured.

Hama presented herself as a kind, wise, and skillful old woman who would take anyone in with open arms if they needed help (which was true to a fault).  She was sympathetic and even humorous, as evidenced by her optimistic attitude at Katara's suggestion of swindling a suitor.

5 Chilling: "You've Got To Keep An Open Mind, Katara. There's Water In Places You Never Thought About." - Hama

Hama Waterbending

Upon initial viewing of "The Puppetmaster," this particular quote may seem relatively harmless and educational. Hama was, after all, the last Waterbender trained in the Southern Style of the art. There's no outward creepiness to her statement. She simply wanted Katara to be resourceful with her bending.

Of course, this was an excellent way to lay the groundwork for revealing Hama's darkest secret. Her earlier comments, teachings, and practices all led up to her telling Katara that she'd invented a new form of bending: Bloodbending. As part of the show's arguably darkest episode, this quote deserves a lot more recognition.

4 Hilarious: "My First Girlfriend Turned Into The Moon." "...That's Rough, Buddy." - Sokka & Zuko

Zuko and Sokka in an air-balloon

Debatably the show's most famous quote, Zuko's response to Yue's fate has been turned into a meme many times. Not along after Zuko officially joined forces with Team Avatar, Sokka decided he would undertake a mission to rescue his father, who'd been captured during The Day of Black Sun. Zuko tagged along to make sure Sokka's plan would go smoothly.

The two got to know each other along the way and bonded over their respective girlfriends, though Zuko was seemingly at a loss for the right words to say.

3 Chilling: "You've Beaten Me At My Own Game." "Don't Flatter Yourself, You Were Never Even A Player." - Long Feng and Azula

Collage of Long Feng and Azula

While Ozai was a force of nature and the real antagonist of the series, he was often overshadowed by other villains, namely his daughter. Azula was manipulative, cunning, and - at times - even downright terrifying. Along with Mai and Ty Lee, Azula conquered the Earth Kingdom and then seemingly eliminated the threat of the Avatar, things the Fire Nation had been trying to do for a century.

During her conquest, Azula also usurped control of the Dai Li, a secretive and corrupt police force led by Earth King's advisor, Long Feng. Though the two initially worked together to take control of the Earth Kingdom, Azula double-crossed Feng and snatched the loyalty of the Dai Li before his very eyes.

2 Hilarious: "It Looks Just Like Him To Me!" - Toph

One of the many running gags of the series is that almost everyone forgets about Toph's blindness once or twice. From Sokka complaining about his vision being too dark, to Katara, Aang, and Sokka happily reacting to Toph proclaiming she'd found Wan Shi Tong's Library, Toph had to remind them several times that's she can't see what anyone's talking about.

While the group was looking for Appa around Ba Sing Se, Sokka painted up a poster of the lost Bison. Katara and Aang were more confused than anything at the sight of Sokka's drawing, but Toph was there to cheer him up with a compliment (albeit briefly).

1 Chilling: "You Think You're The First Person To Believe Their War Was Justified?" - Wan Shi Tong

Never the one to shy away from tricky topics,Avatarmade it clear that no matter how "justified" a war is, innocent people always get hurt. Wan Shi Tong was an ancient spirit with a knack for information, gathering everything he could to preserve knowledge within his library. He was initially indifferent to mortals navigating his collection, but grew to resent them after his library's information was used continuously for war.

Team Avatar discovered that The Day of Black Sun would thanks to his extensive collection, but at the cost of angering Wan Shi Tong further. Though they pleaded with him that they were on the right side of the war, the spirit dismissed their claims about the goodness of their actions.
